It’s Hip to be Healthy

August 28th, 2007

America has a new epidemic, but you can take steps to protect yourself and your family. 90 of every 1,000 Pennsylvanians will be diagnosed with Diabetes this year and African-Americans have the highest Diabetes-related death rates in the state, according to a study completed by the State Department of Health.

This frightening trend can be attributed to the increasing rates of people who are overweight or clinically obese. Diabetes can be prevented or managed with a healthy diet, exercise and blood-sugar monitoring.
The Pittsburgh Post Gazette is offering an article series with stories of Allegheny Country residents living with Diabetes, health and prevention tips, statistics and more valuable information.

The Center for Minority Health at the University of Pittsburgh has also taken positive steps to address this problem as part of their Healthy Black Families program.
This program was first announced in October of 2005 at the Kingsley Center.

Use these resources to keep your family informed, active and healthy.

East Liberty is bringing down the House. This Saturday, August 25, will be the fifth annual Hot House event held by the Sprout Fund. The event will be at Eastside and hard to miss, considering last year the event attracted over 2,200 patrons.

The list of events, which is far too long to mention all, includes all-night musical entertainment by the Mandrake Project, Sonjio, Donora, and Black Bear Combo, as well as an auction, art exhibitions, innovative demonstrations, dancing…

Hot House is considered a “live annual report” by the Sprout Fund. The event showcases all of the most innovative and fascinating projects from the neighborhood, which were supported and funded by the Sprout Fund.

The happening will be followed by an after-party at the Shadow Lounge – admission is included with a Hot House ticket. For more information or to buy your tickets go to the Sprout Fund/Hot House website.

Applying Business Ethics 101

August 21st, 2007

A lesson of ethics and community responsibility was put into practice yesterday. A swarm of 250 Carnegie Mellon University, Tepper School graduate students and community partners bustled around East Liberty yesterday doing community work as part of CMU’s orientation. The students were broken into groups at 13 different locations, learning about a new neighborhood and helping to implement community projects.

The students tamed three vacant lots in preparation for GTECH’s innovative urban, bio-fuel crop farming (read more about this in our previous post, GTECH, Lots of Potential).

Two groups revived the traffic islands at the main intersections of Penn Avenue and Penn Circle East and West. These forgotten, litter-ridden medians were transformed into beautiful neighborhood entrances with an array of flowers and our Welcome to East Liberty sign.

At Peabody High School, a very enthusiastic group of students worked to save eight trees that had suffered from years of improper planting and neglect. The volunteers pulled up hundreds of paving stones to give the tree’s roots more room, as well as put down fertilizer and mulch.

The day also included street and graffiti clean up, street tree mulching, some joyfully messy selective demolition of 4 vacant houses and maintenance of a community garden. The entire day resulted in over 1,300 hours of community service in the East Liberty community.

The work of the students was very valuable and greatly appreciated by the all neighborhood partners. Many of the sites received encouragement, compliments and thanks by passing-by East Liberty residents. The Tepper students showed equal interest in the community by asking questions and intently absorbing the neighborhood. The students’ positive, hard-working attitudes were not dampened by the harsh, storming weather.

East End Blitz

August 20th, 2007

House Closing Agreement

Jacquelin Weitzel of Terra Settlement Services goes over the closing agreement with new East Liberty home owners, Andrew and Bernadette Collins. This is the fourth home to be renovated and sold in the Blitz Build program.

The East End Blitz Build Rehab program is renovating six homes in the East Liberty and Garfield area over eight weeks throughout the summer, with another two homes expected to be completed in the fall. ELDI and Hosanna industries, in partnership with a number of other faith-based groups in the East End, complete a total restoration to one of these houses in only a week.

Every day, 50 to 60 volunteers from church and youth groups refinish floors, fix damages, paint and replace fixture… to prepare the house to be sold. All of the low-income families the houses are sold to are first time home-owners. They receive financial support through local churches, the Federal Home Loan Bank and Dwelling House Savings and Loan.

The Blitz Build program is looking for volunteers, those interested should contact Michael Stanton at Hosanna industries 724.770.0262.

East Liberty LEEDing the Nation

August 16th, 2007

East Liberty was recently featured in a Pop City post for our Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Neighborhood Development (LEED-ND) pilot project. Mellon’s Orchard South, a plan for 79 to 85 housing units, is to become one of the region’s first energy efficient, environmentally planned urban neighborhoods.

East Liberty is one of only two projects of this kind in the region, the other being the Cultural District. Please read more about the exciting, ground-breaking developments in East Liberty!
