Y Lofts in East Liberty!

June 17th, 2008

Y Lofts

Attention East Liberty, a historic community gem is being revived as downtown living! The former YMCA on the Whitfield Street, next to the Carnegie Library and across from East Liberty Presbyterian Church, is being renovated and transformed into loft condominiums.

The YMCA served the East End community from its opening in 1910 until the late 70s, the building then housed a charter school for a brief time. Now, after a total interior renovation, it will become the first revival of housing in East Liberty’s commercial core in more than two decades.

Interested in taking a sneak peak at the new Y Lofts? Well, feel free! A model loft was open to the public during the Art-Cubed event on June 7th and now the model is being open for tours by appointment. To schedule a tour or get more information, contact Jessica Allen, Coldwell Banker Realtor in the Ellsworth Avenue office, at 412.363.4000 ext 737.

Get more information by reading the article posted on WPXI, or going to the Y Lofts website!

YPAC’s Once on this Island

June 13th, 2008

once on this island

The Youth Performing Arts Collective through the Parental Stress Center is putting on a performance of the hit play Once on this Island.

This is a lively musical that tells the story of a small Caribbean island, ruled by playful Gods and Timoune, a young girl who journeys to test the strength of love against the power of death.

The show will be at the Kelly Strayhorn Theater today and tomorrow, (Friday and Saturday) and begins at 7:30. Admission is only $4 and this is a wonderful way to support local youth while enjoying a Friday night show!!

Art-Cubed/Proud Hood

June 10th, 2008

proudhood

East Liberty celebrated its love for music, culture and community Saturday, June 7th for Proud Hood, in collaboration with Art-Cubed. Residents and patrons enjoyed live music from the Gene Stovall Trio, Aboubacar Camara African drumming, and Between Liberties on the steps of East Liberty Presbyterian Church.

On Whitfield Ave., the Westinghouse drum line livened up the street for the few vendors selling jewelery, clothing and other items. Everyone enjoyed the face painting, balloon characters and free popsicles, as well as the sidewalk art. During the event, a live mural was being painted by Kyle Holbrook and his staff on the side of the former PNC building on the corner of Penn and Highland to benefit the MLK mural project.

Inside the Kelly Strayhorn, the historical society displayed local artifacts and the new Arcadia paperback book about local history. There was also a viewing of “Mapping Invisible Lines” a film by Trisha Chicka, which gave her first impressions of the neighborhood. In the Social Hall of ELPC, service providers offered free information and giveaways. People also had the opportunity to get the first glance at the new Y Loft model in the former YMCA building.

The attendance for the event was lower than expected, but all of those who did brave the heat enjoyed a day of great music, arts and community!!
