Target is Coming to East Liberty

November 17th, 2008

East Liberty is about to experience a big change. Target is coming into town and bringing 240 jobs with it. This Target will be somewhat different from the average suburban Target, as it will have two floors. The first floor will be parking, and a glass entry with escalators or elevators will lead to the second floor retail.

Target will be constructed on Penn Circle East where the vacant Penn Circle High Rise is located. Construction on the Target will begin after the high rise and other two commercial buildings on the lot are demolished. The retail store is scheduled to open the fall of 2010.

Read more about target opening at the Post-Gazette website and the KDKA website!

Bakery Row Vision Plan is Making Progress

November 13th, 2008

Bakery Square

The Bakery Row Vision Plan is continuing to make strides to become reality. The past two years have been spent identifying specific development projects in Shadyside and East Liberty that would improve the communities. The planning has been taking place by East Liberty Development, Inc. and Shadyside Action Coalition. They have been collaborating with East Liberty Chamber of Commerce, Franklin West, South Point Breeze Neighborhood Association and Village of Shadyside and others.

Six redevelopment opportunities have come to life from two years of planning and community meetings. These ideas cover a variety of urban issues that East End stakeholders have identified as important. The Bakery Row vision plan is available for downloading on this website and residents want to see developed in the East End.

The planning part of Bakery Row is entering its final stage of being formally submitted to the department of planning. By formally submitting this plan, the city will be made aware of what kind of vision the East End citizens have for their community. This can then be communicated to potential future developers who show interest in developing the East End.

Great Opportunity for Artists!

Artist working on mural on side of former PNC building

Business is something that most artists do not specialize in, and there is an upcoming seminar to remedy that. The Musician’s Briefcase: Legal and Business Tools for the Industry is a seminar that is giving artists a chance to not only meet other artists, but learn how to make a living as a working artist.

Subjects such as copyright, sampling, recording, online publishing, royalties and selling your music, booking, marketing, managers and agents, and getting paid to play will all be covered at the Musician’s Briefcase by people who have experience working in the local industry. The speakers will include Chris Kleiner or Raj Studio, Eric Graf of Blackberry Studios, Justin Strong of Shadow Lounge, Kellee Maize of Näkturnal, and Gene Stoval of Eviction Notice.

The event is taking place on Saturday, November 15 from noon to 4 p.m. The cost is $10 and lunch will be provided. It is taking place at 6000 Penn Avenue in East Liberty, which is the former location of the East Liberty PNC Bank. For more information and to RSVP, call 412-648-1300 or send an email to pitt.ced.clinic@gmail.com.

The Musician’s Briefcase is brought to you by the University of Pittsburgh School of Law Community Economic Development Clinic.

Fall harvest gives new energy to neighborhood.

November 5th, 2008

canola press

On a beautiful October afternoon, six young children from the East Liberty neighborhood spent the afternoon outside harvesting a crop behind their homes. Although they live in the heart of the city, these youth learned a bit about farming and some uses for vegetable oil that day, as they joined with staff of GTECH Strategies, Sojourner MOMS House, and Negely Place Neighborhood Alliance (NPNA) to harvest a field of canola.

GTECH Strategies, with the help of many youth from the Student Conservation Association, turned a lot on Black Street from vacant to valuable, as they planted it with canola, a biofuel feedstock in the spring. [Biofuel feedstock means that we can farm it for its oil and turn it into biodiesel, a form of fuel that can power trucks and other diesel engines, but with less pollution.] GTECH’s mission is just that, to transform lots that are a detriment to the neighborhood into something that can add value, both through the product grown as well as the lesson taught.

The neighborhood kids were excited to harvest the seeds, as they ran from plant to plant with their bucket, challenging each other on who can get the most. After they had their fill of harvesting, they loaded up the seed press and cranked out oil from the seeds. All the kids, from the kindergartener to the seventh grader worked together to create the very first batch of East Liberty Biofuel!
