Immunizations & Bike Rides!!

September 28th, 2009

People who wish they were kids again might want to rethink that statement. Children can no longer avoid their immunization shot. If your child’s school health records indicate that your child is not current in their immunizations they get withdrawn from school after September 30, 2009. Schools do not want it to come down to suspensions, but are declaring the law is the law. Even worse, your child will not be permitted back to school until their immunizations are up to date. For many parents, no school means no work, therefore get your child’s immunizations requirements handled. If you’re reading this right now and your child is not up to date, don’t panic! There are clinics and sites in the Pittsburgh area that are offering the required immunizations for free!! The following locations offering immunizations are as follows:

·         Kingsley Center (341 Frankstown Avenue) Tuesday, September 29, 4:00-8:00pm

·         Board of Education Central Administration Building (341 S. BelleField Avenue, 1st Floor, Conference Room A) Wednesday, September 30,  4:00 -8:00pm

·         Allegheny County Health Department (3441 Forbes Avenue) Sept 21,22,23,28,29,30, and October 1,2 from 9:00am-8:00p.m.

After getting your child up to date with immunizations,  think about treating your child to a bike ride! Experienced guides from the local non-profit Venture Outdoors will lead you on an easy tour of East End neighborhoods and follow it up with a s’mores feast around a camp fire. This event is on Saturday, October 3rd from noon to 2p.m. starting at the Kingsley Association and is free for all East Liberty residents and Kingsley Association Members. The cost is $5.00 per person, or $20.00 per family for the general public. The bike supply is limited, so advanced registration is recommended. Feel free to bring your own bike, too. To register please call Venture Outdoors at 412-255-0564 extension 21 by Friday October 2nd or online at www.ventureoutdoors.org.

Hello! My name is Tiffany Clark, and I will be taking over for Emily Nordquist at East Liberty Development Inc. I and fellow Ally Jennifer Heiskell have been placed at ELDI through a program called Public Allies. I will be updating you weekly about events, new developments, initiatives, and breaking news in East Liberty and the surrounding areas. I am looking forward to serving as the communication link between ELDI and the community members.

Jennifer and I are not newcomers to East Liberty and the surrounding areas. We both currently live in Wilkinsburg, and for years have seen the potential and possibilities of the East Liberty community. After attending Howard University, I returned to the Pittsburgh area determined to bring some change to my community. For that reason, I began working in the non-profit sector within the past year and decided to continue, which brought me to East Liberty Development, Inc. Jennifer, who is originally from the South Hills of Pittsburgh will be assisting the small business coordinator. She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh, where she studied economics. In addition, she has had previous experience working with asset development programs. She loves dancing and meeting new people.

Public Allies is a ten month apprenticeship program. I and twenty nine other talented individuals will work in various non-profit organizations, engage in leadership development training, and complete team service projects. Public allies believe in advancing leadership of community members, and using that leadership to strengthen the community. My fellow allies and I are scattered throughout the city in an assortment of non-profit organizations. Jennifer and I are excited to serve the East Liberty community through working with East Liberty Development Inc. We both are very enthusiastic about improving and revitalizing the beauty and assets of the East Liberty area. So stay tuned for more updates on the work we are doing in the area! If you have suggestions, or comments, feel free to leave a post on the post!
