Pittsburgh Community Services, Inc.’s Stimulus Projects Increase Employment Skills for Qualified City Residents

March 25th, 2010

The recession has severely limited the ability of some families and individuals in the city of Pittsburgh to support themselves. Many go without proper food, shelter, and essential medical care every day due to a variety of factors including low wages, job loss, low-quality education, and/or insufficient training.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) has afforded increased capacity of Pittsburgh Community Services, Inc. to assist many of these families and individuals, not only by meeting essential daily needs, but working toward a brighter future through education-to-employment programs such as Modern Office Systems Training (MOST), Certified Nurse’s Aid (CNA), Customer Service Call Center certification, and Class B – CDL training. For those with basic educational needs, PCSI offers Math Anxiety and English Skill Building, as well as GED Preparation & Testing.

The Specialized Drop-In Center offers individuals and families an opportunity for self-directed study and instruction. This Center allows access to computers with internet connections as well as an array of software that provides instruction in website development, Microsoft Office 2007, resume creation, keyboarding as well as other basic technology needs. Family Resources Acquires the Parental Stress Center

March 24th, 2010

Family Resources has acquired the assets, services and facilities of Parental Stress Center.  Family Resources is the largest private nonprofit agency in Western Pennsylvania focused on preventing child abuse.  This acquisition by Family Resources is a strategic step designed to strengthen its continuum of services and increase efficiencies in achieving our vision.

At least one of every five children in the United States experiences injury and trauma by the age of 18 because of child abuse. Most victims are injured by a family member or someone else they know well.

Family Resources exists to reduce the prevalence of child abuse in Western Pennsylvania and heal its victims. The acquisition of Parental Stress Center expands our capacity to engage the public in our efforts and extends our services to reach more families at risk.

South Highland Avenue Bridge Reconstruction Project

March 18th, 2010

The South Highland Avenue Bridge spans Ellsworth Avenue, the Port Authority of Allegheny County’s Martin Luther King, Jr. East Busway, and two sets of Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks.

The bridge is a two-span, 117-foot long through-girder structure supported by a stone masonry pier. The existing bridge was originally built in 1876. The superstructure was replaced in 1925 and has been rehabilitated in 1938, 1966, and 1972,

Due to its deteriorated condition, the bridge will be reconstructed. The proposed action is to replace the superstructure (girders, bearing, deck, and sidewalk) and rehabilitate/reuse the existing stone masonry abutments and pier.

The project is being funded by the City of Pittsburgh, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, and the Federal Highway Administration.
