Cheri began her day at 6:30 am in East Liberty on the Target project performing traffic control. With the constant delivery of materials and equipment arriving on-site, Cheri plays a major role in directing the flow of traffic on Broad Street in addition to traffic entering and exiting the project. Cheri should also be commended for pursuing this non traditional career and for successfully completing and obtaining the OSHA 30 Hour Certification.

School Board Approves Plan for High Schools

The Pittsburgh Public School Board voted yesterday to approve a plan that would change the feeder pattern for many East Liberty students, close Peabody and Schenley high schools, and relocate the Obama 6-12 International Baccalaureate program to the Peabody building in 2012. The construction of the Target store in East Liberty provides a window into the construction industry and is providing a limited number of employment opportunities for residents among the building trades and crafts. This current phase, Building Shell and Enclosures offers the installation of precast erection columns. There are 18 total columns being installed until the end of October 2010. Funding for the second phase of new housing in East Liberty has been approved by the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency, state Rep. Joseph Preston, D-East Liberty, announced Wednesday.

The $1.7 million in funding and tax credits will help develop 13 two- and three-story buildings at Collins Avenue and East Liberty Boulevard. The project, called Liberty Park, is a continuation of housing that has been systematically replacing old subsidized housing in East Liberty.

Mr. Preston said the agency will help finance approximately $500,000 in PennHOMES funding and $1.2 million in rental housing tax credits for the project, which is being developed by McCormack Baron Salazar Inc.

Target construction begins July 2010

The construction of the Target store began with a Building Trades Career Fair held on July 29, 2010 at the Kingsley Association. The construction industry was represented by Bridges Construction (the General Contractor for Target), the Builders Guild, the Master Builders Association, Associated Builders & Contractors, MWELA, Renaissance III 2000, World-Class Industrial Network, City of Pittsburgh/Careerlink, Shelton Trade Center and workforce development providers including EENEC.

Penn Circle Two-Way Conversion Begins August 23!

Check the East Liberty Post Penn Circle Conversion page for updates on the construction project to return two-way circulation to Penn Circle South and Penn Circle East (Centre Avenue), after more than three decades of confusing and dangerous one-way, four-lane traffic patterns.

City of Pittsburgh press release:

CONSTRUCTION TO BEGIN ON PENN CIRCLE SOUTH/EAST

The City of Pittsburgh advises that construction work will begin on Monday, August 23, 2010, on a one (1) year project, in the East Liberty section of the City, to perform intersection, sidewalk, and street pavement improvements along Penn Circle south and East between South Highland Avenue, and Collins Street. The intent of this project is to convert Penn Circle to two-way traffic operations and create a “Main Street” environment in order to better accommodate business development in East Liberty including the new Target Store. This work will include changes to roadway pavements, sidewalks, traffic signals and signs, streetlighting, new street inlets, and pavement markings, and landscaping. During the various phases of construction the project will affect all of the intersecting streets along Penn Circle South and East.

Work will be performed in a series of phases/sub phases, and will result in lane restrictions throughout the immediate area. The location and extent of these restrictions will change from phase to phase, and will cause delays to motorists passing through the area. Port Authority bus stops will be relocated and the locations will be posted.
